James C. Olin, 83, Houghton Lake, died Feb. 13, 2013, at Munson Medical Center, Traverse City.

A celebration of life will be conducted Monday, Feb. 25, at noon at Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake Chapel, with the Rev. William Winter officiating. Visitation will be held Monday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. John Lutheran Church Bell Choir or a charity of choice. 

He was born on Feb. 19, 1929, in Vickeryville to Jay and Elsie (Sessions) Olin. He graduated from Okemos High School and received his bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University. He had served in the Navy and worked as a director of Consumer Complaints in the Insurance Bureau for the State of Michigan until his retirement. 

He and the former Phyllis L. Carter were united in marriage June 17, 1950, in East Lansing. The couple moved to Houghton Lake from Lansing in 1993. 

Mr. Olin was a life member of the Houghton-Higgins Elks Lodge. He was passionate about his family, golf, the Houghton Lake community and the MSU Spartans.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and his brother, Richard Olin.

Surviving are his wife of more than 62 years, Phyllis L. Olin of Houghton Lake; two daughters, Kristin (Kevin) Sullivan of Harper Woods and Lynne (Jeff) Fossitt of Houghton Lake; brother, John Olin of Lansing; sister, MaryLou Olson of Arizona; grandchildren, Michael (Lauren) Fossitt of Royal Oak, Andrew (Katie) Fossitt of Arkansas and Molly Sullivan and Sean Sullivan of Harper Woods; great-grandson, Tucker Warner Fossitt; several nieces and nephews; and his loyal cat, Missy.
