FIRE TURNS SHELL TO ‘HELL’

Denton Township Firefighter Russell Flicker (on top of canopy) gives Fire Chief Paul Tiepel, Firefighter Josh Sanford and Fire Captain Jim Hoover (on ground left to right) a description of an electrical problem which caused the sign at the Prudenville Shell Mini-Mart at 1311 West Houghton Lake Dr. (M-55) to catch fire Monday morning. Hoover said the fire started in a small transformer which powered the fluorescent light inside the letter S in the lighted sign, and Station Manager Tammy Havlik put the time of the fire at 10:20 a.m. She said that “Mike,” a member of an audit team from Schmuckal Oil in Traverse City (which owns the station) put out burning material that fell to the ground near the gas pumps using a fire extinguisher before fire units arrived on the scene. When asked how it felt to have her “S” burn, Havlik said “The name says enough (referring to the remaining letters left on the sign).” Power was shut down at the station from the time of the fire until 1:30 p.m.
